Revolutionary 2-part, modular FireWire computer recording system!

The Onyx Satellite FireWire Recording System features a sleek, portable FireWire recording pod and dedicated Base Station. The FireWire bus-powered recording pod has two premium Onyx preamps and top-notch 24-bit/96kHz capable A/D and D/A converters. Great product, great value, great deal. I've used it with Reaper, Sonar, and a few other things. Works very well, nice sound. For the price, without doubt the cleanest preamps out there. I'm running an AT4040, and a few small condensors, and it sounds great.

Seriously between the solid design and functionality....are you serious? this is s great product! I have used many different components similar to this (Lexicon-Omega) etc. and this just kills them. The talk back mic is worth its weight in gold and the sound is crisp and easy to manage. The two headphone jacks are great and the setup is easy. The only problems is when you clip with this system it tells you by making a really annoying clipping sound (easy fix just turn down your master) and it was a little tricky to get my latency setting correct. Otherwise this thing is great I would recommend it for any home studio.

Mackie Disappointed Me On This One

Straight to the point. It runs HOT!!! Turn it off when you're not using it. Absolutely NO VISTA SUPPORT. Yeah, that's mostly Microsoft's stupidity, but come on!! Vista's been out long enough that Mackie could have created Vista drivers by now. Can't use it with my laptop, which was the primary reason for the purchase. An expensive paperweight for me. Will have to sell.

Great w/ Firmware Update

This is a great little unit for recording tracks at home or on the go. Pro sound quality and flexible i/o make this a no-brainer at the current price. If you're used to hardware monitoring, you'll need to get a firmware update from Mackie that will allow you to monitor both the audio from your DAW and the input on the Satellite at the same time. For my purposes (and I would think anyone else who wants to record latency free), the Satellite was useless w/o this update. Only real negative is you will be punished for peaks - even a slight clip sounds horrible and sometimes playing back several tracks will cause this. Overall, a steal at the current price.

I am a music teacher and find that recording your own tracks for teaching is a lot easier than finding them online, and dont forget having to pay for them. I do a little recording on the side to get this thing paid off. So when i taket his to work with me, i take the portable system along with me, but when i want to do some big recordings with synths and guitars and vocals i use it with the docking station for more options. The only thing is the gain control can be very sensitive at times, and i find, as an amerature recorder, i have no use for the control room/talkback feature. as far as everything else goes, i get superb sound quality and somewhat easy handling when it comes to using this. even though this is very tough, due to the metal contruction, i use a pelican case to keep it safe from dents.
