The fastest, most natural way to produce professional-quality music on your Mac or PC. |
If you like sifting through endless menus and windows to make music, Tracktion 3 is not for you. Based on a simple, single-screen interface, Tracktion is the fast, powerful, complete solution for turning your ideas into finished songs. And unlike the competition, Tracktion 3 comes with all the power and plug-ins you'll ever need. So if you want to keep your music flowing—not locked in menus or limitations—you've come to the right place.
Composition is the first part of the music-making process, and it's also the most important. If you're like many musicians, you don't want your audio software to simply document your performances; you also want it to inspire them. So Tracktion 3 music software serves up everything you need to get your creative juices flowing, right at your fingertips.
When it's time to dig in and actually record something is when you'll realize how different Tracktion 3 is from other audio software. If you've never recorded audio into your computer, you'll be amazed at how quickly Tracktion 3 lets you get going—creating real music within minutes. That's because unlike most other music software, which is designed around analog mixer concepts and routing, Tracktion 3 is truly different. It uses a simple, single-screen interface for all basic recording and editing operations—with a property panel that follows your every move, providing pertinent information for the task at hand.
Once tracks have been recorded, it's time to see if they cut the mustard. Thankfully, Tracktion 3 has some of the best mustard-cutting technology out there. That's because Tracktion's editing power is as good, as or better than, software costing hundreds of dollars more, yet it retains Tracktion's hallmark ease of use. As with most non-destructive editing software, Tracktion's editing allows you to undo and redo your edits to your heart's content—so there's never any fear of messing up your song.
A new Marker Track allows display of all your markers in the edit. But Tracktion's markers are special in that you can treat them as clips, much like audio and MIDI. So you can move them around, split, stretch and edit them. Name and color them as needed to identify different sections of your song. And store and recall them using lightning-fast key commands.
Mixing, of course, is the art of leveling, panning, EQing, adding effects, and otherwise accentuating individual sounds and instruments to get your song to sound just right. Most audio software accomplishes this through the use of a dedicated "mixer" screen, which mirrors the faders and knobs of a traditional analog mixer. Tracktion software, however, has never had—or needed—a dedicated mixer screen, because its users are actually "mixing" their songs throughout the recording process. This is really the genius of Tracktion, and one we'll explore a bit here.
Once you've recorded and mixed your music, you'll want to master it to give it that polished, radio-ready sound. Or you may want to send it to a trusted musician or producer friend for a second, or third, opinion. Thankfully, Tracktion 3 lets you easily do both. Tracktion's built-in archiving capabilities let you save and send your project to other Tracktion users so they can listen, collaborate, and edit. Of course you can easily export to a variety of formats such as .wav, .aif, and .mp3 to share with those not yet part of the Tracktion Collective. And because Tracktion 3 comes bundled with Mackie's acclaimed Mixing and Mastering Tools, you can rest assured that the final music will rock as hard—or as soft—as you like.

If you get a track, or even a portion of one that you want to keep, SAVE IT IMMEDIATELY!!!! Traction 2 was an infinately more stable platform. Total crashes and computer restarts are frequent with version 3. The colors are pretty though....

I really wanted to like Tracktion 3, and I defended it to my friends and used it when it first came out. Bottom line, it's somewhat easier to get started on Tracktion3 than other programs. Everything is on one screen (as opposed to three screens with Protools). But once you start getting more advanced in recording, if you are still using Tracktion, you have almost no one to help you (other than forums with too many frustrated and angry critics) and you are largely on your own. As you get better at recording, Tracktion3 gets harder and more convoluted relative to what the rest of the world does with a DAW. Don't get me wrong, they all get hard and convoluted! It's just, Tracktion starts out easy, but some of the advanced features confused me. Sometimes, trying to do everything on one simple screen, will eventually make it confusing. I'm not saying it's illogical...it's more logical than many others! It's just...we are used to the idea of a mixing board screen like the other DAw's use. Also, owning Tracktion is like owning a foreign car that no one in town knows how to fix or work on. I have both Tracktion3 and Protools8, but I switched to ProTools8, not because Tracktion is a bad program. It's actually an awesome program, with loads of features, and if you watch the video several times you'll get some of the advanced features. But I switched because I need to share files with others to help mix down, etc. And there is no one locally who I can go to, to ask questions when I'm stuck, with Tracktion. There are more forums and available helpers for Protools, due to bigger user base. You can even go to Youtube and download all kinds of stuff to watch on Protools, precious little is available to watch on Tracktion 3. For those who say Tracktion is buggy, I do not find it any more buggy than Protools8. Much of the "bugs" are because we don't know how to make either of them do something in midi, or we have a setting wrong somewhere, or can't figure out how to make it do something we want. Here is my advice: If you want to do a little amateur work around DAW recording, and want to get a program that has loads of VST's and bonus stuff, then this is a good deal. It's a great deal, if you want to do simple recording and are not trying to produce stuff that is going to LA or Nashville. But if you intend to eventually "advance" in the world of recording, want to go professional or semi professional, then you might as well bite the bullet and purchase a DAW that is more widely used and supported in the industry. But when you go with Protools or other big industry names, you are going to spend 3 or 4 times more than with this Tracktion program, and you will be stuck with buying their proprietary hardware in order to make it work. You will also find yourself being nickeled and dimed to death, buying more and more proprietary stuff to make it work. But that is the cost of going Protools...while you can use almost any interface with Tracktion, you can't with Protools. But the tradeoff is, those few interfaces will work with fewer glitches with protools. I regret that I spent months learning Tracktion, only to have to "relearn" another system. But I do appreciate that Tracktion lets you use most VST's, you can even download free VST files, and that Tracktion will let you use most interfaces (unlike Protools..which is very, VERY proprietary.) If you are a stubborn, creative, independent spirit, you may love Tracktion3. If you are always going to do your own things, and you want no help, like to read manuals and figure things out on your own..and if you have some recording studio knowledge... and will share files with no one, Tracktion3 is fine for you. If you want to work with other band members or local folks in your town, or if you want to create something in your home or basement and send the DAW file to a professional studio for final mix or master, you're way better off getting something beside Tracktion3. It's just not the industry standard, and although it's a brilliant program, others won't understand and won't be able to help you when you have questions or need help. Finally, for the sake of those happy and silent Tracktion users out there, I hope Mackie sees fit to continue to support and develop this DAW.

Just finished a cd recorded with tracktion. I don't get the negative reviews. this software has been compatible with everything I threw at it. No latency problems. rewire and vst work flawlessly. Great autosave function even though it's the most stable software I've ever used.

Don't bother with it. Spend some money on something better. There is no point in trying to explain the reasons. It is what it is... junk.

The Traction Ultimate Bundle may seem like an amazing deal. All those add-ons make a very attractive offer. However, the one catch they fail to mention is that most of the included VST add-ons are locked to Tracktion and cannot be used with any other DAW or VST host. A major let down on this end. I think Mackie should come clean and list which VSTs are locked to Tracktion. The only three I was able to figure out how to get working: Sampletank, GPO, and Drumcore TK (via rewire). The DAW itself is a fair value for the sale price. Its biggest drawback is the cluttered interface. Not much polish here. Maybe it made sense to the programmer who built it, but they should have brought in a more experienced user interface designer. (Black text on dark grey background, for example.) Bottom line: If you're in to Tracktion this is a great upgrade. If you're not, you aren't missing much by moving on. For those on a very tight budget try to pick this one up on sale. Otherwise, you will find many more features available in another low-cost DAW. Additional note: I had problems with Tracktion when trying to make it a rewire slave with Ableton live and FL Studio. It worked fine as a rewrire host.
