Nady RSM-1 - Look out for the slack ribbons!

In my business, I've had the opportunity to examine nearly one hundred Chinese manufactured ribbon mics like the Nady RSM-2. I've found that 30-40% of them have extremely slack ribbon tension - the ribbon actually sagging out of the magnet gap over 80% of its length. This causes low output and distortion. Once way to check for slack ribbon tension (if you own one of these mics) is to listen in headphones as you rock the mic back and forth. A ribbon that is too slack will produce a metallic "clanging" sound as if flops back and forth across the gap. This should be repaired.

This Nady ribbon mic is the only mic I use now for vocals. It differs from condensers in that it's not "too" sensitive - pops and excessive silibance are far less a concern with this ribbon. What comes through is the "musicality" of the human voice, with seemingly little or no eq required to "fix" recorded vocal tracks, and with words like "warm" and "smooth" coming to mind. A bit boomy on acoustic guitar, and quite good on electric guitar cabs as well.

Used this on guitar cabinets with incredible results. Originally mixed it with an SM-57, but later need only the RSM-1. Very rich and full and needed almost no EQ for final track. Tons of low end.

I can't wait to try it on vocals.

With the Nady RSM-1's, Finally I was able to afford a pair of ribbon mics!

As soon as I got them I tried them in my home studio recording voice, accoustic guitar, electric guitar (and bass) along with drums and a Hammond organ with a Leslie.

I can honestly say the wait was well worth it! So far I am stunned at how good these mics sound - and how easy it is to get that sound. The figure 8 pickup pattern is much easier to work with then I had been led to believe.

The sound of the RSM-1 is quite simply - very natural!

I love these mics!

Feels good

Nice mic for the price. It feels warmer then the rest of my collection of mic's. I will use it as often as I can. I don't like the fact that I have to prop it up to keep the ribbon from sagging but I'll live with that. It's a ribbon thing..I'm now looking at the Nady RSM 2 and for the price I may have a couple of them soon.
