Good Preamp for a Beginner Studio

I've owner this unit for about 2 years and have since replaced it with units from Focusrite and Avalon, but I must say that it was a great little unit for beginners and project studios b/c it gives you a lot of option for little coin. I have actually removed the TMP-3 from my studio rack and have placed it in my live rack as the 1st unit in my live vocal chain. This is a utilitarian product that won't really blow your mind in any way, but it does it's job admirably especially considering the price. Because so many Digital interfaces have sub-par preamps, this Nady comes in handy. It can be a little noisy if the gain settings are set too high but that's really the case with pretty much any preamp. All in all, it's relatively clear and doesn't color the signal too much. The eq section is pretty standard. I do like the included compressor but know that you should not rely on this unit for compression. It is not a tranparent compressor, especially at higher ratios. I have found that the compressor is best used with the threshold set high and the ratio set low. This way you can shave off the peaks without getting audible compression throughout the track.

If you are just getting started in recording or you want a quality preamp with a few extra bells and whistles, the TMP-3 is great value all in all. Don't expect it to replace dedicated compressors and eqs in your setup, but also don;t be turned off by the low price...Nady make a good unit.

OK for a first preamp

This preamp has some nice features and works pretty well with a vocal mic, but the noise it creates while recording via computer is annoying - a faint but obvious hi-end whine. The compression feature is somewhat confusing and doesn't create much difference, and you can't boost the signal too much without creating overdrive - not good for voiceovers.

Not bad

Pretty good for the price has nice sound with some distortion but it is very minimal. The compressor funtion on this is a plus. I think it is good for underground Hip Hop which I do. It gives vocals a grimy feel to it. Overall I most say it's not bad at all, nice for a home studio.

Why Not?

Using this as a bass guitar preamp and for the price, what could I complain about? It works, has acceptable noise and distortion levels and more than adequate control. Would be nice to have a front panel input or two but otherwise no complaints. Nady is the king of value.
