Shockmounted, Right-facing Bottom Capsule

The Neumann TLM-193 is a front-addressed cardioid-pattern microphone ideal for professional recording, live productions, and project studios.

Acoustic features

The large diaphragm capsule inside the head grille has a very smooth frequency response over a wide acceptance angle. The curves are flat and parallel to the 0° frequency curve up to 10kHz within a pickup angle of ±100°.

The TLM 193 differs from omnidirectional pressure transducers where, due to physical reasons, the diffuse-field and free-field responses never agree. This microphone has a very even diffuse-field response for all polar patterns. This is important in a reverberant environment, as more reflections arrive at the microphone from different directions.

The acoustic information is not affected in its tonal quality when recorded by the microphone. This characteristic is achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects. Therefore, the microphone maintains an excellent impulse response reproducing all transient phenomena of music and speech without coloration.

Electrical features

The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone." With TLM technology the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit.

As with traditional transformers, it ensures good common mode rejection, and prevents RF interference, that may influence the balanced audio signal.

Compared to other microphones the self noise level of the TLM 193 is considerably reduced. As it is capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 140dB without distortion, the TLM 193 provides a dynamic range of 130dB, according to DIN/IEC 651.

Operational safety

All exposed surfaces of the microphone capsule, including the diaphragms, are at ground potential. This technology makes them highly immune to electrical and atmospheric interference and contamination through microscopic dust particles.

The capsule is elastically mounted to avoid any structure-borne noise that could interfere with its operation.

The frequency response of the TLM 193 amplifier is linear down to 20Hz. Even very low bass signals are reproduced without coloration.

This implies that the microphone becomes more sensitive to subsonic frequencies, from structure-borne noise or pop-and-wind noise. To avoid any LF interference, we recommend using the EA-1 elastic suspension mount and a windscreen or pop filter. Requires phantom power.

May Not Be Best For Vocals

I'm writing this to inform that if you're expecting this mike to sound like an 87 or a vintage 69 on vocals, it doesn't. What this mike is best for is recording instruments. I had trouble for years with mikes not accurately reproducing what was being picked up. After getting a perfect sound on a guitar setup, I would be disappointed when the recording wasn't exactly like what I heard live. This mike is perfect for that. It also sounds great with some vocalists, but it doesn't have that rich sound on vocals that those other mikes have. I wouldn't use those other mikes on my guitar. This was worth every penny.

This mic is one of the best purchases I've ever made. It makes it into nearly every stage of my productions. I'm currently using it on hi-hats, guitar cabs (with a Sennheiser 421), bass cabs (with the 421 and a direct feed), all vocals, and acoustic guitar. What makes this mic so great is that it has a pretty flat and neutral response, but with the clarity, detail and warmth you need out of a good mic. Because it is fairly neutral, it makes it really good on any source you use it on. Some mics (like the U87) over hype certain vocalists and they're not as universal. This mic is amazing! If you only have budget for one good large diaphragm condenser, consider this and the KSM-44! I've had this three years and wouldn't trade it for anything!

Neumann Quality, the sound that every one wants but thinks that they cannot afford. Buy it, believe me the first time you use this mic and hear the results you will not be sorry. this Mic is very accurate and will not color the sound you are recording, Awesome for vocals and critical recording. Words cannot describe this mic but your ears and your recordings will. Neumann Mics are what the Pros use I was at a recording session at Paramount studios to record a 65-peice orchestra, all the mics were Neumann or Sennheiser, that has to say something. Good room, good musician, good mic good placement, this will give you arecording to be proud of. Happy Recording !!
