Excellent Unit

As musicians, we can't take away from the fact that the Beatles recorded their ultimate album, Sgt. Pepper, on 4 track technology. But we are definitely light years away from that. The 2480cd is one heck of a unit. I love the fact that we can mix down all 24 tracks by using V-tracks. I had an 1824cd and had to give away 2 tracks during mixdown, unless I bounced a few during the process. I highly recommend the DVD manual for ease of learning this machine. There are a few drawbacks, but it all boils down to what you have and how you use it. Try the plug-ins that are available like the TC Electronics reverb. This kind of technology just wasn't available in the 70's when I was just beginning to get into the world of recording. Buy this unit and you won't be disappointed. I guarantee it. Get a set of good mikes and you are well on your way to having the time of your life and creating great demos, or finished products. Have fun !!!

I've only had it for a few days, but from what I've seen, this is an amazing product. Again, I've only had a few days to play around with it, and I'm still very new to the art of music recording, but I love this machine. Right out of the box I was able to plug it in, and start recording. It can be a little confusing setting up the tracks to record, but once you figure out the process it becomes second nature. I can't wait to get some more time with this machine under my belt.

Actually for me, the only disappointing features that lack qualities on this gear are the built-in mic-pres. But take it this way, if Roland were to equip this machine with their best audio components we would have to expect a pricier product. I always recommend you equip your studio with better-quality external mic pres and/or hardware signal processors instead of relying solely on the built-in features on most home studio gears such as this one. Purchase the expansion board so that you can enjoy your projects immensely with the work of optional third party plug-ins from Antares, IK Multimedia, Universal Audio, Cakewalk, Joemeek, Sound Toys, and so on. The best project is not the result of the best gears used; it's a bi-product of the engineer's skills and the tools he utilizes in his work. Believe or not, some of the hits you probably have heard on radios were the end results of some home-recording studios equipped with less expensive gears, recorded, mixed and sometimes mastered right off their desktops.

For the money, you get a powerful recording tool at an extremely affordable price. For the price of this one piece of equipment, I've recorded a short EP in a good, but expensive studio. With this DAW machine, you can make professional recordings for years to come. I've filled up over 200 Gigs worth of hard drives w/ 24bit/44.1khz music over the last four years and it's still going strong. PROS: The automation is an awesome tool. The effects cards are worth buying and maxing out your effects a slots. The cutting and pasting is pretty simple. Sound quality feels closer to tape than a Yamaha, but still not analog warm. Loads of multi-take ability and punching in and out is a breeze. I use the road case and travel w/ this thing and carrying this one suitcase as opposed to a couple fo racks of gear is awesome on the back. CONS: Seeing the WAV form is difficult and doesn't work that well. Editing w/ a mouse, at least with early software versions, is crappy. You half to operate the old fashioned way, with your ears and rolling the "tape" to the proper places. The scrub isn't bad, but I don't use it much. Hard drive care is an afterthought and backing up data is slow and tedious. TWEEKS: Suggestions for Roland. A smoother motor for the fader wouldn't be a bad idea. And if there's a way to add a mastering only card w/ more visual frequency and phase analyzers would be nice. And a more accurate and usable visual wave form would do wonders.

A Great Machine For the Home Studio

Imagine 24-bit of audio quality in a DAW hardware with the same capability of a software-based recording system. Then, there's the massive 80GB of hard drive to accomodate your near-limitless bundles of projects. And, finally, who would have thought that todays' hardware recording DAW's would be capable of taking plug-ins?. Yes, because this machine is like a computer housed within a hardware system, the capablities are endless. Yes, the manual is useless. I would recommend you purchase the DVD manual instead. It will get you up and running in no time. This gear is great for live gig, especially if you need multiple backing vocals, live recording, and in your home recording studio. I know I love it as an add-on to my gears.
