they have their place

I've used these microphones in a number of situations for drums in place of 421's or RE 20's. I think they sound pretty good on rack toms, though in my opinion the 421 will always be THE mic for rack toms. Also, they sound just a little more than okay on floor toms, but after doing that once, I'm probably gonna opt to not do it again unless I have to.

Honestly, where these things really shine is on bottom snare, with a 57 on top. If you compress it just right in comparison to your snare top, you'll be hard pressed to get a better snare sound.

The 3-pack is a pretty good bargain. If you're recording a drummer with high-tuned fusion rack toms, you can do that plus a snare bottom, then use a 421 or an RE 20 on the floor.

I've also seen this microphone used as a bottom floor mic and a batter side kick mic with decent results. Its versatile like that. All in all, I think it has its place, and though I haven't tried it, I'm sure it would be great for hand percussion.

amazing...but pricey

I recently bought 4 of these used for a great deal and tried them out by recording a practice on drums. Until that day I had only used Sm57s on snare and toms. My sm57's have been demoted to backups and the occasional snare bottom on recordings. These things blow away the sm57s and are much smaller and easier to place. Overall my studio and live setups have migrated from Shure to Sennheiser. They are a little pricey but theyre worth it

Great mic

I use these as a professional audio engineer. I've used the Audix D series (loved em) and the Shure SM series (hated them) and I've got to say sennheiser/newman is my all in one solution. I also integrate some behringer and Samson mics into the mix as well. And for other use I still have my audix fusion and D series mics. Over all these are cheaper than the D series and easier to place. Strong as hell and work great. Sound incredible for the pro and amateur shows. Whenever I can I use the 900 series, but the 600s are great, I also use an e835 and the 865 for vocals (same cost as a shure 50, the performance of the shure beta 58 or 87) (the 845 is around 200+). For the pro shows use sennheiser, whether it be these or the 900 series.

I ran sound in a club for a while and used one of these on the snare. Some nights I could hear the drummer repeatedly whacking the mic with his sticks. The mic always sounded great and never got a scratch. The small size makes it easy to place, especially when you get one of those drummers who just has to cram a ton of gear up on the riser.

Yes, the mic is a wee bit pricey, but I think it's worth it. You will never get a 57 in the space and a 57 will come apart with only a couple of hits from a drumstick. Sounds better than the 57 as well.

Best mic for live drums I've found

This mic is a soundman's dream. Connect and remove in 2 seconds. The sound is comparable, and as good as, an sm57 - and I say that as one who loves the sm57. I also like the flexibility in positioning the mic downward toward the drum head. The only negative thing I have to say is that the price for the single mic is too high. The 3-Pack is a better value, but I'd like to see them a little cheaper still. But overall, it's the best option for live drum miking I've found.
