After about 2 months...

I'm really growing fond of these cans. The area they accel in is without a doubt tracking. These have great isolation, minimum mic bleed, better than most headphones out there. For the price it's a steal. Yes they are a bit bright in the upper mids and a little light on the bass, but that makes them good for monitoring and as a mixing cross reference. Though I would not use these for dedicated mixing, there are better open back headphones for that. And also note that there IS a breakin period, I left these playing heavy metal at moderately high volume levels and went to work, came back 9 hours later and they sounded better! much smoother so don't be turned away by the sound right off the bat. Get these and you won't regret it!

I now own three sets of these wonderful jewels. I bought these items for home recording use 6-7 months ago and I've had nothing but trouble. They seem to pick up external bass tones and amplify them into your head. This seems to create a bell out of your skull and rings it well into the night. These do cause some discomfort when wearing as they are extremely tight. All three headsets I proudly own are useless in the left ear. The left side is dead to say the least. They seem to lose this function easily and I don't want to pay for the replacement parts at a cost of more than half the value. Perhaps Shammheiser can sit down with their R&D team and design a product that retains functionality for more than 6-7 months and does not injure the user.

I love these phones

I bought these primarily for just for listening, mostly to high bitrate mp3s and flac files, although I do listen to vinyl periodically. While I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, I love all the little nuances you can pick up when listening to music through a really good quality set of headphones. I was worried at first by the mentions of them being too tight (I wear large and XL hats), but they only bothered me for about a week before they stretched, and now I can wear them for hours. The coiled chord has never bothered me, but I generally listen to music at my computer which is right next to my stereo amp, so there isn't any need for a long cable. I'd also recommend using these through an amp, because the headphone out on my computer doesn't seem to have enough power to really drive phones -- a lot of bass is cut out when I listen without the amp. I am 110% satisfied with these headphones.

2 Big Cons

Sennheiser HD280 Headphones 1. Coil Chord The chord is coiled like on a telephone. It gets caught on everything. Unstretched, it is only ~5 ft. long. So it dangles and pulls down on your head with the weight of a 10 ft. long cable.

2. Too Tight These are so uncomfortable to wear for more than an hour. I get a bad headache and cramp in my jaw from wearing them. I would say I have a normal sized head and slightly larger than normal ears. To give you an example of how tight these are. If you take them off, the ear cups press against each other with enough force to hold up a legal pad. Now imagine pulling them 8" apart and inserting your head.

I bought these headphones for drumming to music without damaging my hearing. They nicely reduce the decibels of my Pearl masters kit so that it sounds like I'm actually playing in the song and not just to the song. Their sound quality is quite excellent for their price range and overall I'm glad I made the purchase.
