I bought 4 of these, two weeks ago. Great mic. One of the best condensers I've bought and well worth it. I use two of them to mic the upright piano at my church. Previously I had been using the Shure SM81 which is a very good mic as well. But the e914 had more presence. To me the Shure SM81 is better for cymbals, percussion, etc. Also the e914 is better for acoustic guitar, it's less boomy than the SM81. Plus, the 3-position sensitivity switch is fantastic, it will certainly come in handy down the road. I gave it a 5 for features for this. Overall it is a great investment for me. Still, like the SM81 but for other things.

A reference Mic !

This microphone has a very clear sound with almost no coloration added to the material you record. When I A/B tested the mic against several other condensers, I could clearly hear what colorations other mics where adding to the sound. In that respect it is sort of a reference mic. It has a very crisp high frequency reproduction without sounding at all thin (since it is sensitive to the entire spectrum). There is a very slight boost to the mid high frequency (around 2DB to 6 to 8 khz ) which is sort of perceived as more presence by ears. It is not so much that the sound is in any way unnatural. Many other mics which are claimed to have a flat frequency response have a lot more variation in their response. When looking at frequency response curves, one needs to remember that they are prepared with a relatively loud source. So, many mics may not produce the same response curve at different sound pressure levels. In my opinion the ultimate judgment should be on how a mic sounds in practical use, and this one performs extremely well.

Now that I have tested this mic, I am planning on getting another one to use it as a stereo pair for overheads as well as instrument recording. It can even be used as a vocal mic in a home studio (with an external wind screen), as log as you are not trying to add a particular warmth to the sound. Since as I mentioned, it does not really add or subtract anything from the source material.
