Shaker's Mad Dog harmonica microphone adds a totally new dimension for harp players to explore. Imagine a mic with a full, rich voice; a lot of bottom end; and a mid-range with complex overtones and smooth, clear treble—that's the Mad Dog. Now imagine a microphone the size of a walnut that's so ergonomically perfect that it stays just where you put it between the webbing of your fingers, eliminating hand fatigue and freeing your hands for gestures, while giving you the ability to wail without worry. The Shaker harmonica mic features a purposeful shape, a large-diameter dynamic element housed in an injection molded sono resin case, and it's distinctly voiced to emphasize lower mid frequencies, creamy tonality, and a great response. You'll develop new techniques never before available to harp players. The Mad Dog microphone has a more aggressive, almost industrial look and the design is a balance of form and function. It's a serious tool for serious harp players. Shakey Joe of Shaker mics says, "The Mad Dog is so awesome it even makes me sound good!"

Shaker Harmonica Microphones are part of a sophisticated music making system, one that includes the harmonica, the player's hands, the microphone, the amp, and the player's personal techniques. Traditional methods of measuring response and behavior become pretty much irrelevant because Shaker's don't fit strictly into the established categories of polar patterns. By using a sampling of the harmonica's sound and directing it through acoustic ports into a volume-tuned chamber, Shaker harp mics become, in essence, miniature hand-held recording studios. This is known as Shaker GNS technology, or good noise sampling, resulting in great tone, extreme technique sensitivity, and tremendous feedback. Designed and engineered by Shakey Joe, these mics are totally handmade in the US and use as many American-made parts as possible, making Shaker microphones the real deal. Made in the Arizona desert by harp players, for harp players.

This has a very similar tone and volume as the Shaker Dynamic mic, but it's ergometric design is far superior.

It hooks into your grip pretty unobtrusively, and it sits far enough in the back of the palm that you have decent freedom of movement without the harp hitting the mic. Anyone familiar with playing bullet mics should have no trouble using this.

That said, the Mad Dog may be just a tad too big for smaller hands, but there's the Mat Cat for those folk (although it supposedly has a thinner tone).

The only complaints I have with this mic, is the same as I have with all the dynamic and most crystal harp mics. The volume level coming out is low, and the tone is somewhat harsh and brittle. This means more EQ twiddling on the amp to achieve a good Chicago tone.

The Mad Dog doesn't have a bad tone at all, it's not so brittle as a Bluesblaster for example, but it's not a compressed 'beefy' tone of a Green Bullet.

Long story short, if you like the tonality of the Green Bullet, get a Green Bullet because so far I've found nothing that comes close to it's output and tone.

But if you like a more variable harp mic, one that can do rock and Chicago style blues with a bit more mid-range bite than a Green Bullet and can also handle delta style work, this is probably the best thing going.

The ergometric design is definitely worth the extra few bucks.

The ONLY unique criticism for this mic is nit-picky. The vol knob isn't the style and location I'd put it were I to design one from scratch. However, it works just fine as it is.

BTW, Shaker does make them for lefties as well (those who hold the harp in their right hand while 'wahing' with their left). Just call 'em up.
