You can't expect a lot of feature in a dynamic microphone hence the lower rating there. I mean, it has a diaphragm, a body and a swivel joint, what else is there to say? Anyway, I got this mic (along with a bunch of other clip-on mics) because my drumset is very tightly put together and most conventional setups don't work for me. Finally, an engineer told me I should just pack my own mics around with me so that's what I now do. This mic sounds fantastic on snare drum and electric guitar (haven't tried it on anything else though) and is super compact so I think it's well worth the money. Sounds much better than the traditional SM57 and doesn't get in the way. OH, and it's rock solid but don't expect that rubber band or the "beta 56" name plate to stay on the mic very long.

This mic Rocks... if you want accurate reproduction, or extreme EQ'ing this mic will give it to you. It also handles very high SPL's without distortion. Good stuff.

Not bad, but needs a couple of design improvement.

The sound quality of the Beta 56 is excellent. Basically it's a Beta 57 that has an up and down pivot point. I have two major problems with this design.

1. Inside the pivot mechanism is a set of teeth and a rubber washer used to grip together so the microphone remains stable at that pivot point. The problem is that this rubber washer gets caught in the teeth even when you loosen the tightening screw and change the pivot setting. Eventually the rubber washer gets chewed up and rendered useless.

2. The XLR jack on the microphone is located at the bottom of the microphone pivot arm where the mounting mechanism screws on. This not a problem if you use the LP Claw to mount your microphone. I use the Mic-Eze tom-tom clip. The problem is that the wing nut that adjusts the angle of the of the mounting arm on the clip interferes with the microphone cable plug.

What Shure needs to do is make the Beta-56 more like the PG-56, which solves both of these problems.
