Fantastic for live vocal applications! |
If you want your vocals to be heard, the Shure Beta 58A Mic is built to make it happen. It's a high-output, supercardioid dynamic microphone designed for professional sound reinforcement and project studio recording. This has made it a leading choice among vocalists and touring musicians worldwide.
The Beta 58A maintains a true supercardioid pattern throughout its frequency range (50Hz-16kHz) and a shaped frequency response that is ideal for close-up vocals. Its neodymium magnet provides high sensitivity and output. The superb performance of this microphone is not affected by rough handling because of its rugged construction, proven pneumatic shockmount system, and hardened steel mesh grille. So whether you hold it in your hand or mount in on a stand, you'll get the kind of sound you planned.

Happiness!

We are an acoustic/vocal duo. So it is imperative that everything in our live sound is right. Our vocal mics were just worn out I suppose and we replaced them with the Beta 58. We are soooo happy! This mic is clear, bright, and we are able to get the vocals up in the monitors without feedback. Just know that you will have to change you eq and change settings and get used to it. All the sparkles that are in your voice but often get lost over a sound system are now there--where they're supposed to be!

I used to use four of these every week. Typically, the proximity affect on these mics is pretty apparent, so that needs rolled off. There is a midrange spike around 500Hz, that need notched out. Then the highs just don't sound clear, so a high shelf is needed. Here's where the trouble comes in. I get feedback at 9kHz every time I go up like 3dB or so on the high shelf filter in the floor monitors. They just don't sit well in a mix and sound muddy just like an SM58. It will make a bad singer sound better, though. I mean, they are durable and sound ok for most people, but if you have a decent system, PLEASE, PLEASE, consider your options. Shure technology is OLD...sometimes 30+ years old. Listen and go on forums before buying something considered a "precision instrument." They really are not. I now use an Audix VX5 in combination with Heil Sound PR-35's. The difference in sound quality is JAW DROPPING and...NO FEEDBACK anymore!!! I know VX5 is condenser and PR-35 is dynamic, but, Bob Heil knows what he's doing and they sound about the same in clarity and transient response. Frequency response is slightly different on the two though. I can crank anything I want on those PR's and they're fine. They can be had on sale if you look around for the same price as a beta58. Youtube has comparisons of Heil PR series mics and the 58's. Difference is eye opening. When I got my first PR, I used it in combo with four of the beta58's. It was so clear and crisp (with great transient response) that no matter now much I turned down my vocalist on the PR-35, you could still clearly hear him cut through the beta58's. I was like wait a minute, no way the betas are that bad. It was a surprise to me, and will be to you too if you try a PR mic. Put Shure to the test and realize there now is better technology. Way better technology...

So there I was, in the live sound room...

I wasn't sure, at first, what it would be like to use a really good microphone. I won't point fingers, but I had been using a microphone that would be better off if used as a hammer. As such, I dedide to go shopping. After looking through over 20 mics, I saw the b-58, surrounded by a beam of golden light (later revealed to be coming from a bulb in the ceiling). After trying it out in the live sound room, I knew that I'd found the instrument for me, with a low-end capacity far exceeding any other mic I'd tried. My one qualm, however, is the conspicuous lack of an active-off switch. That being said...Thank you, Shure! A great microphone, and a great value.

It appears Shure has raised the bar. This mic delivers on all fronts, having superior gain before feedback to the Shure 57. Much better than all mics in its price class. Spectacular value!

The Beta 58 is a great mic, but it is a little bright for my voice. I've heard other singers using it and they sound fantastic tho ... so it's more of a personal preference for me. This mic definitely has great gain before feedback. Much better then the SM58 - which I've never really liked. It's also very road worthy. I have a very bright voice to begin with ... so this mic doesn't suit my voice as much as I'd like. I thought I loved it until I recently tried a Beta 57 ... and I'm in love with that mic for my voice. Bottom line .. if you get this mic, you'll probably be satisfied. I prefer the Beta 57, but this is also a very nice mic.
