The Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic is a new take on an old classic. The Beta 87 was consistently a top choice of performers and audio technicians due to its accuracy, detail, and rich vocal production. Now this longstanding favorite has been redesigned as the Shure Beta 87A. It has a thicker handle that gives a more comfortable feel when hand-held. It also includes a new break-resistant swivel adapter and low-frequency roll-off to compensate for proximity effect and to prevent boominess. The supercardioid pattern provides high gain-before-feedback, and its 3-stage pop filter minimizes breath pop and noise. Frequency response: 50Hz-18kHz. Requires phantom power.

Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic Features:

  • Supercardioid electret condenser mic
  • Redesigned with a thicker shank for hand-held comfort
  • Break-resistant swivel adapter
  • Low-frequency roll-off
  • 3-stage pop filter
  • 50Hz-18kHz frequency response

I expected better

After reading mostly fabulous reviews, I bought this mic. Wow, what is all the hype? I run a sound company and use a wide assortment of mics and being old school I find today there are far better choices than Shure. Most of the sm57s and 58s I've sold. If you want a round warm sound with strong feedback control. Get the Sennheiser e945 or 935. Even the 835 and 845s give the shure 87a a run for its money at less than half the cost. Also the cad d189 and 195 are better choices. I simply expected a warmer creamer sound from this mic and it didn't deliver.

Great Mic

I bought a Beta 87 because I was always singing through a 58 and sounded muddy. I was never playing in places that had a good sound engineer, so I began to think that perhaps I should invest in a better mic and that might help. After reading around, it sounded as if several of my musical "icons" were using one, so I picked one up used. It has been a tremendous mic for me. It sounds good no matter where I am, no matter who is running the board- it really cleaned up the muddy quality of the 58 that I struggle with. I bring it everywhere I go and the 58 that I own is just weight in my bag!

I am an average singer who is very picky about microphones... in the last 5 or so years I have used: SM58, Beta 58a, EV767a, AKG D3800, Sennheiser e835, settling on the Shure KSM9 for most of the last two years. I am writing this review mainly because I think this mic makes me sound better than the KSM9. What a surprise. It is fuller, warmer, and has a very predictable proximity effect. It seems there is something about the KSM9's very flat frequency response that makes great singers great and left me constantly tweaking. In contrast, this mic sounded amazing immediately upon plugging in and after some minor eq/comp tweaking I've never sounded better. I'll never stop trying new mics, but at this point, I have found my mic in the 87a.

A Great Mic In The Right Situation

I purchased this mic a while back, and you get amazing clarity every single time. It also has a very high output. The only problem is you have to use it on larger stages or stages where you are farther away from the drummer. This mic tends to pick up a lot of snare that can become irritating on smaller stages. The proximity effect is also awesome, just be carefull about where you have your monitors because it can tend to feedback if your monitors aren't facing slightly in towards you at an angle. The users guide that comes with it addresses what to do... Overall a great mic, on the right stage. Also sounds pretty good on a snare drum.

I have a CAD C-195, and it beats the beta 87A hands down!!! The Cad is much clearer(highs & lows)and hotter than the beta 87a, at less than half the price. I was totally disappointed. Don't waste your money on this mic, it does not live up to its promises!!
