The Shure KSM44 Studio Microphone is a multiple-pattern (cardioid, omni, and figure-8), externally biased, dual large diaphragm condenser microphone. I purchased this mic back in Nov of 2007 to lay down vocals for a rap artist and female pop artist with incredible range. WOW! This mic picks up every nuance in the vocal. It is super sensitive but dial down the gain and this mic still delivers rich and warm lows and highs. This is the funny part. I recently "upgraded" to a neumann U87 anniversary edition when my artist got a nice deal with a label back in April. Now every mic in the world will always give you a different sound than the next mic. The U87 is super clean... BUT... which was better? Couldn't tell you. I just completed a 22 track album with a female pop artist and we used the Neumann on just 7 of them. And the KSM44 sounds great without no need for an expensive preamp. I have all my mics going to the MacPros via an Apogee Duet interface. Unbelievable!!! And for the price?!!! Listen, if you have the cash for a U87... heck, why not, but otherwise, this is your mic.

I absolutely love this mic. I recently had a U87 to compare side by side going through a UA LA-610 tube pre and an Apogee Ensemble sound card. Not a pro set up, but but better than your average home studio gear. I had a very difficult time trying to decide which mic I liked better for lead vocal recordings. They both were warm , low noise and did great on any level of vocals I through at them. I have yet to do a side by side with recording acoustic instruments (drums, guitar, etc.), but as far as vocals go...even the most critical ear would have a difficult time trying to decide which mic offered a sweeter sound or quality. Forget about the fact that this mic is 1/3 the price of a U87, this mic could pass for a much more expensive mic. Buy it!!

I've been using this mic for about a year now. This mic is just a fantastic value for the price. It hasn't sounded bad on a single source that I've used it on yet. My primary applications have been in omni mode as a room mic for drums, vocals, and guitar cabs (with a Senn 421). I've also had good results on bass. I'll definitely be purchasing this mic once I no longer have access to the ones I've been using recently. Check it out!

The KSM 44 is the best condenser mic under $1000.

It is highly accurate and records virtually every instrument well. If you need one mic to do a variety of recording, this is it.

Features include a 3 setting bass rolloff switch, excellent shockmount, & sturdy storage/travel case. It has omnidirectional & unidirectional settings.

This is a nice mic. It is less colored than a Neumann U87 and about as sensitive. It gives a very open big sound to instruments and vocals. So far I have only used it to track clean guitar and vocals. Had to use the 15db pad on everything but real soft vocals otherwise it would peak out but that is not a problem. For the money I can't think of a better mic.
