My band bought this mic as an addition to our 2 PG58s that we use for vocals. We had heard the PG57 sounded just as good on vocals as it did on instruments, and since we needed another vocal mic we figured we may as well get a mic that was more versatile and could double as mic to record guitars in mt home studio. It was a good decision, and it has been our drummers vocal mic for two years now and been through almost 50 shows and many practices, it has been severeley abused but it still sounds great, the durability is just amazing on this thing. On the studio its just a bit tinny over our amps, it sounds similiar to the sm57 but a little worse.

These mics are amazing! I needed something to mic amps when a few of my friends and I got together, so I tryed out these. I experimented micing an amp with a pg58 I have and it sounded great! I decided to try the 57's, I ended up buying 2 of them! I have not used them a whole lot yet, but for the recordings I have done, they sound awesome. Crisp and clear. Mount it on one of those short desktop boom stands, throw it in front of an amp and you are good to go!

Comparison to SM57

I own both the PG57 and SM57 and use them primarly for recording guitar and snare drum. I did a test with my Marshall JCM800 half stack with the SM57 and PG57 at the same position on two different speakers, each with the same input level. After recording a series of clean and distorted guitar parts, here are the results:

The two microphones have noticeably different tonal qualities. The PG has more output than the SM, but despite their similarities they sound entirely different. The SM is much warmer and has much more treble than the PG both on clean and distortion. The SM sounds much more natural than the PG and has a more focused pattern, so less background noise is picked up. The SM just sounds more real.

The verdict: Both the SM57 and PG57 are awesome mics! Although both will work very well for serious recording applications, if you have the cash, go for the SM57. If you're on a tighter budget, the PG57 is still an amazing mic for the price and you wont be let down!
