Awesome microphone. I am building my sound system but with not a whole lot of money. I bought 3 of these mics and have used them at events with actual sm58's, and the quality is not hardly noticeable. Bodies wont take a beating like an SM will, but the clarity is incredible, especially for the price!

great microphone for performance and recording

The shure pg 58 dynamic microphone was the first "real microphone" that I owned for recording. (This was before I knew much about audio equipment). I plugged it into the computer with a set of adapters and recorded. At close range, the quality wasn't great, but not bad either. The internal "pop filter" wasn't really worth much. But from about 6 inches, no pops were detectable even without a wind screen, which I purchased much later. However, the internal "shock mount" was great, as I dropped this mic probably 3 times and no damage occured. Later, I bought an audio interface for this mic and was pleasantly surprised with the quality upgrade. I actaully preferred the sound of my pg 58 to the sound of my AKG 100, as it had a much fuller, albeit muddier sound. This was probably due just to the nature of dynamic microphones, rather than the quality of the mic itself. After a while, I finally my pg 58 to rest for recording, but won't hesitate to use it for performance. 3 years and its still holding up. It is a versatile mic and a must have for any performer (unless you have the SM58 of course).

I have the SM58 mic and purchased a pair of PG58's. The build quality comparing to the SM58 is night and day. The sound is a lot weaker also. With the Shure brand, I'm surprised they have reduced the quality of their product this much. I'm glad I was able to exchange for another pair of SM58s.

I didn't want to spend that much so just got this mic. When I compared it to my sm58 I was surprised because it sounded great, it seems to be just as loud and have the same quality of sound! Great mic for the price and the accessories are nice too...

Compared w/ SM58

The build quality looks the same as the SM58. The PG is actually a tad heavier, for whatever that's worth.

The published spec. sheets show this mic has inferior response in the lowest octaves compared to the SM58. (The SM58 is flatter down to 100Hz, then rolls off smoothly and fast.) And the SM58 has a smoother bloom in the upper frequencies. The cartridges are different. Probably, the SM58's is more carefully QC-ed.

I hear them both all the time, and I can't hear the difference between them. I HAVE experienced the PG58 presenting feedback when used with a stage monitor in front, but I'm a hack so it was probably my fault. The cord is thinner than one would normally buy with a quality mic. Still, it comes with a cord for $40 less than SM58. A great buy.
