The Sterling Audio ST66 is a tube condenser microphone that employs a large capsule with an ultra-thin 3-micron evaporated gold Mylar diaphragm. Optimized to capture the most definition and detail from all acoustic instruments like piano, drums, and guitars, the ST66 mic's low-noise GT6205M tube in a Class-A triode circuit provides warmth and detail, adding new dimension to vocal and especially instrument recording.
The ST66 uses triode wiring on specially selected pentode tubes to yield low noise and a more realistic dynamic response than their competitors. Its power supply is designed with a load-balancing circuitry that allows cable runs of more than 200 feet with no deviation from optimal performance.

One of the more important advancements is their Disk Resonator system. With it, Sterling Audio is uniquely able to compensate for the 14kHz frequency roll-off that is inherent in large diaphragm mics. As any good audio engineer knows, this deficiency translates to a lack of sparkle from high-frequency sound sources.
Other manufacturers have typically solved this problem by cutting other frequencies and then increasing the entire signal to help even out the frequency range. Unfortunately, this results in increased noise.
Disk Resonator Technology incorporates a brass umbrella that protrudes from the center of the diaphragm in Sterling Audio's ST66 microphone. It gently boosts the diaphragm sensitivity to shorter sound waves, allowing it to respond more accurately to those all-important higher frequencies. The result is optimal sensitivity, full frequency response, and a low signal-to-noise ratio.
Another piece of audio wizardry comes in the form of the ultra-thin diaphragm membrane made of Mylar. While most modern condenser diaphragms are 6 to 12 microns in thickness, Sterling Audio, in association with 3M, has produced a highly resilient Mylar that measures a mere 3 microns. This allows the ST66 to deliver an extraordinary degree of sensitivity.

Forget about the RODE NTK!!

I was so surprised when I used this mic how warm sounding it is. I was getting ready to buy a RODE NTK and knew and have used it but was told about the ST66 and was blown away. IF you're looking for a nice mic at a great price (which by the way I paid more for) you can't go wrong. It uses a Groove Tubes tube inside and is basically the same model as the Groove Tubes GT66 but much warmer.

I've owned the St66 for about a year now, and I would have to say that this mic was the best choice for me for recording vocals, and clean guitars. Yes it is a sensitive mic, it will pick up ANY sound near it and should be used in a controlled room. But that is not a bad thing at all. You want a condenser mic to be this sensitive. It doesn't miss a beat. If someone is tapping a pen on a table in the next room, surely you will hear it, so use noise gates if you dont have a controlled room with lots of acoustic foam. I own and operate a small facility, but this was the best bang for the buck. Perfect frequency response and true sound. Good highs, good mids, and good lows. Screams sound good and even intrigated with vocal pitch correction software, screams translates great pending you didnt get any headphone bleed in the mix. other condenser mics would not work for me cause I needed pitch correction but they wouldnt translate well. The ST66 is an awesome mic.

This mic is amazing for vocals. Adding that warm tube sound, and the clarity is perfect. This mic, however, doesn't seem to like instruments too too well. I'm sure had I tweaked the EQ a bit more I could have gotten a good sound, but for instruments I'd stick to smaller diaphram mics (and I prefer to use non-tube mics and pre-amps for instruments). Overall, for the value, using this mic on vocals, whether it be male or female - you cannot go wrong. It is a really nice sounding mic.

I really like the Sterling Audio ST66 for recording vocals. It has sounded good with all the voices that I've tried (basses to sopranos). I've not, however, been satisfied with the recordings of instruments that I've gotten with this mic (acoustic guitar, violin, piano). It is quite sensitive, and if there's any background noise while I'm recording, it shows up. In a silent room, however, it's silent. This is my first condenser mic, and I am really glad I bought it.
