My main mic...

I have a small time studio biz, and I did not have a ton of money to invest. But, I wanted a killer pre-amp first and a solid large diaphram mic second. I got the LA-610 mic pre coupled with this ST77. The mic is no frills, and I like that you don't have any options with db cut, directional patterns, etc. It does one thing and does it well.

It seems built very solidly and is pretty hefty. I don't like the cheap plastic emblem on the mic and so-so veneer storage box. But that is esoteric stuff and I would rather they cut costs that way instead with the mic itself.

It captures excellent vocals with a well controlled low end response, all the mids you could want and articulate soft highs without too much sibilance (I rarely need to use a d-esser and if so, very lightly). It is also great on any acoustic instruments from violin, to sax to acoustic guitar. I also use it as a mono mic over or in front of the drum kit with superb results, it captures the whole kit tone and cymbals quite well. I have even used it along with a kick mic only, with simple yet excellent results for a lo-fi band.

I have been to higher end studios that use numerous room mics on my drums for other projects, they sound good of course, but for my studio, just give me my ST77 and keep it simple. I have had all my customers comment on the quality of sound they get using this mic. Of course it helps to have a super pre-amp with an excellent optical compressor as I have in the LA-610.

Very happy with this microphone as my sole large diaphram condenser and I don't feel the need to upgrade at all with this current pre-amp and mic combo.

I didn't want to wait to plug this in when I opened the box. So, I unplugged my German Mic that was all EQ and set for the old mic. As one who has used and been priveldged to have owned some of the high end high dollar mic. When they say smooth in the description, it is no exaggeration to say this thing smoothed off the edges, and is a clean as the Hi end German mic I swapped it with. In short. Great Mic. Keeper. Can't wait to get working with it, as it has such a smooth and clean sound.
