TASCAM's DP-02 makes recording simple by matching 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface, so you can ditch the menus and concentrate on the music. A pair of record-quality TASCAM mic preamps features XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar input for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.
Two effects processors are included in the DP-02. A multi-effects processor on the input provides great-sounding overdrive, flange, delay, and more for your guitar, vocal, drum and bass tracks. In addition, there's a reverb processor on a send and return for adding hall, room, plate, or chamber reverb to your mix. The DP-02 is loaded with great TASCAM extras like a chromatic tuner, metronome, and bar-and-beat display for getting around your song.
The DP-02 records two channels at a time to a built-in 40GB hard drive. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown. You can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection or burn it to a CD with the slot-loading drive. No other workstation makes recording so simple, affordable and fun as the TASCAM DP-02.

This is a great machine. I have had it for a year now, and it is hands down the best one that I have owned. I have owned and used a few Fostex recorders. This one sounds better, is easier to use, and just feels like a better quality machine. All the pots and slides feel great. My only beef is only having the ability to record 2 simultaneous tracks, and only being able to assign effects to one of the 2. It's usually not a problem the way I go about recording though. All and all, I love this machine. I get great sounding recordings with not a lot of effort or confusion. It's very straight forward. If your considering this recorder,,,do it,,, you won't be disappointed.

I record tracks alone, one at a time, layering as I go. Make several songs a month. THis machine is perfect and is THE goto machine I use although I have others.
No hiss, great sound, VERY intuitive out of the box. Recording is easy and pro sounding.
The only limitations are:
1)IF it is not close to your computer, you will have to physically move it so you can hook it up(USB) - disk burning data for transport gets old. my brother has the version with the flash card for transport which may be better in this senario.
2)Does run out of memory after about 40 songs. thus need to clean out or transfer data eventually.
3) Mixing the final tracks (fading/panning ect,when saving the master song)if you mess up mid song, you have to start over at the song start. (unless im missing something)
4) internal speed when exporting the final song WAV's for computer transfer is a little slow (2-3 min?) - (but recording/mixing doesnt have any time delay)
These are not deal breakers for me! still the best recorder for the money - pro sound

I'd highly recomend this product. I recently upgraded from a 4 track tape recorder to this one. Dollar for dollar I don't think you'll find any better value than this one. I'm on my 4th song now & I can't beleive how much you can do with it. I like the fact that you just plug in & record. A direct box is the only external source I use. Awesome effects. Crystal clear recordings & vocals. When you pan your tracks out, set your EQ's & and use the studio reverb effect, you'll swear your in an actual studio. And last but not least, this thing is so simple & easy to operate.
I'm glad I bought this one.

Another thing I want to mention is that I see a few people that say it crashes and they lose all the data. I've not experienced this, but it will tell you in the manual that you should save your work often. But isn't that how most computers are? I had to learn a few things when I got started too, with other aspects, but as you read the manual you pick up fast. I still learn about functions I didn't even know this recorder could do. I'm more than happy with my purchase. It really comes down to vocabulary and navigation with this one. Very user friendly and informative. Thanks Tascam.
