TASCAM's DP-02CF Digital Portastudio has enough recording power to let you create a full production at 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality. The DP-02CF combines 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface.

The DP-03CF Portastudio's one-button-per function design is for musicians who want to record quickly and have fun! First, record your stereo drum machine using its 2-track simultaneous recording, and then use the line inputs to record bass and layer guitar parts. A song position bar/beat display makes it easy to overdub. Or, if you're going the straight acoustic route (no drums), use the internal metronome to keep time.

Next, use the low-cut filter, two-band EQ, and pan controls to make sonic space for your vocals, which you can record with a high-quality condenser mic thanks to a pair of matched TASCAM preamps with XLR inputs and phantom power. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

When you're happy with your tracks (and you should be happy with a DP-02), mix down to a dedicated stereo master track and save your final mixes to an included 1GB CompactFlash card (The DP-02 records two channels at a time to the card).

Finally, you can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection for MP3 encoding or CD burning from your Mac or PC. Let the fun begin!

TASCAM DP-02CF Digital Portastudio Features:

  • Two XLR mic/line inputs with phantom power for condenser microphones
  • Eight-track recording at uncompressed 44.1k/16-bit audio quality
  • Portastudio-based interface with volume fader, pan, effect send, high and low EQ controls per channel

I'll start with the good. It's incredibly easy to use setup, start, import and export also its inexspensive. If you want something to record your riffs throw on solo's listen to them later this is the thing for you. The bad, this particular has no effects for you to use which to some isn't important but I was very disapointed. If your in a band and you want this to record your songs to cd and to show people , sell , ect this unit is not for you. If you want something that can capture your idea's and store your general sound then this is perfect. This isn't your cheap ticket to good studio sound. It can however allow you to get your ideas "down on paper".

In just a few minutes, I was up and recording. The unit is intuitive, with sliders and pots, as opposed to menus and what not. It's easy to use, and makes a good quality product.

I purchased this recorder for making demos with my band and was a little worried that it might not be up to the task. I had also heard that it could be hard to operate for the non-recording engineer type, so when it came I read the manual a couple of times and then took it to band practice. We had it up and running in very short order and actually got a couple of full tracks recorded! The sound quality is fantastic (easily as good as some "pro-studio" stuff we had done) and once you get the hang of the controls, it's pretty easy to use. One thing I like is that after you master the track you can export it as a wave file, which means it saves it as such on the card. You can then either use the USB connection to dump it to your computer or simply put the card in your computer's card slot (if it has one) and read it straight from there. The included card is a bit small (we only got two tracks on it) but that can be easily fixed by getting a bigger card. All in all this is one of the best buys I've come by!

My brother bought this recorder to record his solo project, but purchased a better one, so he passed it down to me, it is a little confusing starting out. But has great sound if you can get the right condensers to use with it. Once you get use to operating this, it is simple, just a quick couple buttons and your set to record. It is great for creating demos for a band or just a side project for solo arists. I have not yet, found any problems with this and hopefully won't. Good shopping!
