Tascam DP-02FX/CD Digital Portastudio
TASCAM's DP-02 makes recording simple by matching 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface-so you can ditch the menus and concentrate on the music. A pair of record-quality TASCAM mic preamps features XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar input for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

Two effects processors are included in the DP-02. A multi-effects processor on the input provides great-sounding overdrive, flange, delay, and more for your guitar, vocal, drum and bass tracks. In addition, there's a reverb processor on a send and return for adding hall, room, plate, or chamber reverb to your mix. The DP-02 is loaded with great TASCAM extras like a chromatic tuner, metronome, and bar-and-beat display for getting around your song.

The DP-02 records two channels at a time to a built-in 40GB hard drive. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown. You can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection or burn it to a CD with the slot-loading drive. No other workstation makes recording so simple, affordable and fun as the TASCAM DP-02.

This studio is great, it does what it is supposed to do. The cd quality is right on. It doesn't take a smart artist to use, but I do recommend you read the manual all the way through to get the studio potential out of it and use the effects right. The mic stamd is not the best and I recommend a pop filter to get better quality sound. Add a cheap berhinger mixer to it to get even better sound recording also. The mic is good enough to throw some quality tracks. Make sure to position as a over hang mic for better sound. The fostex monitor speakers are awesome. Like I said, I know its easy to use, but read the manual to get the full potential out of the studio. Can't complain about the quality of the tracks, they sound crisp and clean. It's worth the money, so buy it now.

Since this is my first venture in digital home recording and I'm completely new to this, I'll tell you, for the price, this package is great. The recorder itself is user friendly, but limited to 2 tracks at a time(Was able to set up the entire package, and reherse in just under a half hour). The fostex monitors are compact, have a decent sound quality, and are easy to use. The mxl 990 mic is great for the price-clean sounding, but very sensitive. the stand is stable. For someone looking to lay down afew tracks at home, with a limited budget, this is more than enough for you. Great compact non computer based home studio package.

The Portastudio is a STUD!!

I bought the TASCAM Portastudio package because of the Fostex studio monitors and condenser mic and chords that came with the 8-track recorder. I've never owned a digital or analog recorder before and thought getting the whole package together would not only be cheaper but easier. This package truly delivers they did a good job putting this package together.

In the past week I have recorded myself and others using the 8-track Portastudio. It is very easy to use and the quality of the recordings have been outstanding. This from someone who has never owned or used a digital recorder before. I have now completely redone a demo for my acoustic rock trio and I have had several musician friends stop by to record a few of their songs with the same outstanding results.

The effects for the guitar, bass, vocals and drums are very serviceable and can be used for anything. I have used guitar effects for drums or vocals, or have used vocal effects for guitars, etc. The unit is really versatile in this way. You can experiment with it. Mixing down the tracks is very easy. The internal reverb is outstanding. Bouncing tracks into one or two tracks is a breeze. Punching in and out of a song to fix those unfortunate mistakes is simple and completely undetectable. The one word I can use to describe this recorder is it's consistent. It does a great job each and every song that you record.

The internal CD recorder/player is very convenient and is great for burning multiple CDs right after producing the final mix-down of a song. It's instant gratification. The only complaint I have is that it does take a long time to burn songs onto a CD. If you have 4 or 5 songs running about 15 minutes total, it takes about 15 minutes to burn the CD. But it's worth the wait. The songs I've recorded on the Portastudio sound great after being burned onto a CD and listened to on a car stereo, computer, myspace web pages and home stereos.

I haven't fooled around with the condenser mic that comes with the package. It sounds good, but I prefer my SURE vocal mic for recording. The Fostex studio monitors are outstanding. Killer sound. All cables included in this package are very high quality. Mic stand is serviceable.

The cost of this recorder is cheap compared to the quality of the songs it can record. It's hard to believe that you can record songs that sound this good on a machine that costs so little. Amazing.
