Great recorder for the price

I was amazed at how this little recorder sounded. It picks up vocals and acoustic perfectly without even going through any mixing board or Pa in a little room. It also gets the job done for my band's practices. You'll have to set it in the "sweet spot" of the room and watch your on-screen volume level so it doesn't clip. This also works well for live shows, you can go from the mixer straight to the line in for a clearer sound. I didn't give it the highest rating, because I know there are better, but more expensive ones out there. For the price though, this is a steal. If your having doubts about getting one, don't. You'll be glad you did. This has helped my band progress alot, and we will never forget a riff we come up at practice again.

Pros: Low price, pretty good quality recordings, SD card, Line in/line out.

Cons: Basically all plastic. Power supply did not come with it (It would be a good investment to order one if you don't want to waste alot of AA batteries).

The DR-07 is a Producer's

I own a studio in San Francisco, and time is money. I bought 4 of the Tascam DR-07 recorders because it was a "Stupid Deal" that day, and the other reviews seemed to all be positive. Once they arrived, I had them recording stuff within 5 mninutes, because it really is easy to use. I own some very expensive microphones, and I can honestly say that the built in mics on the DR-07 are very clear...they have a very flat frequency response, so you might want to run the WAV file through a tube equalizer or a tape saturation emulator if you like that "old school" analog sound, but really, with what they give you up front, you have a very clear noise free baseline to work from. I wanted to do some voice overs for a party mix, and instead of using my laptop with a microphone, I just used the DR-07, then moved the SD memory chip to my computer (a 2 GB SC card is included, that alone is worth a few bucks, and you can always upgrade you know), and Win 7 recognized the files no problem, so I edited them in Cool Edit, and BAM I had my voice overs all ready. If you get a few of them, you can put one in front of each member of an orchestra or live band, then you can synch them together later in Pro Tools, thats another cool use of them. My opinion is, if you own a home studio, or even a million dollar studio, this will be a tool you keep in your back pocket at all times.

I regularly read reviews, I don't think I've ever written one; however, I wanted to let readers know that this recorder is pretty darn good. I received the unit yesterday, read the manual last night, and then experimented recording guitar/vocals this evening. Recording directly to the WAV format, the recording quality was very clear using the built in microphones. I can't imagine messing with an external mic. The user interface is very similar to the guitar/bass trainers (good, since I own the bass trainer). I haven't hooked it up to a computer yet, but don't expect any problems transferring files. I was very happy to find out that the unit shipped with a 2Gb SD card... no need to go out and purchase another card anytime soon.

I was looking for an easy way to record guitar and vocals without setting up my 8 track recorder and this works.

I'm looking forward to taking the unit out and recording my garage band and my kids recitals...

I just picked up the DR-07 for capturing practices, lectures, off-site field recording and pretty much anything else that wasn't worth hauling along my portable studio.

Overall, I'm very pleased; the mics are accurate and sound great, the interface is easy to navigate and intuitive (I had to hit the manual for a couple issues), and the performance has been excellent for my purposes. My recorder came with a 2GB card (rather than 1GB) and recording to wav at 24bit offers around 3 hours of use - the recordings themselves are very well-defined and accurate.

My only issue so far has been the housing for the unit itself: the record button is already showing a bit of "user-wear" after only a few weeks, but the functionality is in no way affected. Still, I suspect it is not the kind of device that you want to just throw into a kit bag; it would probably get a beat-up look pretty quickly.

I compared this to the Alesis ProTrack to use with the iPod. I was a bit disappointed to give up the XLR inputs that the ProTrack feature, but not having to rely on the presence of the iPod has been a benefit. I've already encountered a couple of "spontaneous sessions" where my iPod was sitting in my car - thankfully, I keep the DR07 in my kit bag (in a case).

I purposefully was staying in this price range as this is not my main recording medium. If I was willing to pay more, I probably would have been more inclined to go with the Olympus LS-10.
