This might possibly be the greatest item in world history, or atleast in portable recording. The internal mics boast serious top notch stereo sound which is as high of quality as our ears. The overdub feature is pretty sweet and way entertaining to play around with. It is perfect for recording samples for industrial or experimental music. The exporting from the recorder to a computer via USB is quick and simple, and the .wav or .mp3 files turn out great. It also is a perfect little box to record any ideas or rehearsals, or even complete songs. The reverb fx is pretty slick, but i have a computer, recording studio, and mixer that can do the same thing, so it doesn't really impress me. The only minor flaws are a lack of certain options (that are minor enough that i can't remember them) as well as the inability to name the files on the recorder (unless I just don't know how to). Besides that, this little item is absolutely perfect. It is built solid and works smoothly, and I've had it half a year and it still works flawlessly. No matter what you do, even if you don't even want a portable recorder, you should still buy this, that's how well it works.

Cheaply Made

If you are buying this to actually use outside of your bedroom then choose another brand. The buttons are so cheaply made that in a little over a month the unit would no longer work correcty. Tascam's "fix" lasted for exactly 1 use till it broke again. So back it goes for a 2nd time. Wish I had spent the money on a Sony.

I bought this about a year ago and it is still going strong. I have taken this to countless jam sessions, group rehersals, family reunions, road trips, solo jamming practice time and carry it around for just listening to tunes on the go. I have recorded from my Roland drum kit into the 1/4" input, very simple. Sounds AWESOME. I have used it to record a 5 piece band rehearsal out of a 12 channel Mackie mixer. Again, AWESOME. I have pirated concert tunage using a SM-57 (FE XLR to MALE 1/4" required). Built in condenser mic's are OK, work fine for spoken word situations but a C1000S is pure magic.(Again, adapter required, no XLR jack) I also use the line in & 1/8" jack for tranferring XM Radio recordings to MP3, WAV, or whatever. I even use this thing to tranfer vinyl to MP3! Display is clear & easy to read. Works great with vista, charges while USB is attatched and tranfer is a snap! The optional mic stand holder and AC cord is VERY handy! Since I got this, the other guys have all bought other brands of digital recorders from Sony to Samson but this one stands alone. It does what I need it to do. Would I buy it again? Oh Yea!

Good Design, Medium-Quality Construction

The Tascam DR-1 is well laid out as far as control buttons and the on-screen menus. It is light-weight and efficient to operate.

However, the construction leaves something to be desired - the plastic body and jog wheel seem a bit flimsy for a device at this price. The sliding door that covers the USB port is connected by two seemingly delicate plastic posts that don't inspire confidence.

I bought this recorder a few weeks ago to help me remember parts I write on the fly. The sound quality has proved to be much clearer and better than I anticipated, and the loop function and playback features were very easy to use. I suggest buying the accessory pack, or else you will have a lot of trouble in finding a good spot to place the Recorder. Overall a pretty good deal.
