Your interface, control surface, and recording software needs are covered!
The TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface features a comprehensive control surface with moving faders for powerful, intuitive control. A great choice for small studios, it has four microphone inputs—two with analog insert jacks—have phantom power for professional condenser microphones. Four additional line inputs and a S/PDIF stereo input add up to 10 inputs simultaneously, each at 24-bit/96kHz audio resolution. Two MIDI inputs and outputs are provided for 32 channels of MIDI synth playback or control. The control surface has nine 60mm touch-sensitive moving faders for silky-smooth control over channel level, pan or aux settings. Four encoders are also available for mix control, as well as transport and jog/shuttle controls. Stereo monitoring is included, and the FW-1082 even mixes signals internally for stand-alone use.
It includes Cubase LE recording and mixing software and GigaStudio 3 LE software sampling software, a 64-voice version of the streaming sampler application. It works well with Steinberg Cubase and Nuendo, Apple Logic, Apple Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Motion, Cakewalk Sonar, MOTU Digital Performer. It also works as a HUI control surface and MIDI interface for Digidesign Pro Tools.

This was a cool interface and daw controller. I was using it with Vista 32 and had no problems with it. Unfortunately, my pc died and I'm looking at a new laptop with Windows 7 64. Tascam is claiming that no Windows 7 drivers will be created. Sad.

I've used the TASCAM 1082 for four years. It's a professional studio, so the mixer has been used almost daily.
The software setup to Cubase SX was not a simple plug n' play, but stable once all the parameters were set correctly. As I recall, it took me four hours.
If you're a heavy user, you can buy more reliable hardware. Two motorized faders on the 1082 "lost traction" and had to be replaced. The power supply failed as well. With lighter "weekend warrior" type of use, this unit would perform well.
The quality of the input/output has been excellent.

I'm going to be completely honest. This isn't a Digi oo3, so don't expect it to be. But on its own, its not a bad interface, it sounds pretty darn good. The preamps are surprisingly impressive. The faders are a little loose, but beat knobs any day. Set up is relatively simple. I'm using this for demo's, and its a major upgrade over my previous interface, the fast track ultra. Basically all I need now is a great A/D converter and I'll have an amazing quality recording. I think my favorite thing about this is the job wheel and playback/record buttons. Its such a time saver. My only complaint is that there are only 4 XLR In's. Kind of a bummer. But for the price, I don't think you can beat this machine.

First of this is a pretty big piece of hardware.
2 excellnt quality no noise. Works quite well with Sonar. Even in its mackie emulation mode I have not gotten it too work with Acid or Vegas. That was not an issue I thought that might be the case when I got the pannel. It works nearly flawlessly with Sonar. Setting it up with Sonar is a no brainer. For the money it seems to be a very good value. I would highly recomend it for use with Sonar. Be aware when you think of this product you understand what it is actually doing. It is using midi to control a motorized mixer. It then writes your touch control mixer motions to your audio envelopes in Sonar. You then rerender the project. It saves a lot of accidental mouse messes that are possible in a big complex video project. I am not sure why these devices are not more standardized and broadly compatible. They are a bit pricey. Beyond a 20 minute Video project they begin to be real handy. It also seems to crash on occaision ,but at an acceptable level and I relly don't know fully how to use it yet. Written manual with it is basicly worthless , but with Sonar you do not need it.

It is a Lovely Product for someone who puts his feet in this field of recording. I feel that for such low price it is absolute value for money. The recording quality is excellent, Given no problems till now, Firewire is the best way to go in recording. It gives excellent control to the engineer. However it lacks the qualities that we need as a Pro Engineer like 5.1 surround monitoring, Has only 4 mic ins, no talkback support, no expansion scope, no LCD, no headphone routing functions. How can you expect all this for such a low price though. It's definitely a excellent deal if one is tight on budget. no regrets but as u grow you'll want to upgrade. so either save more and buy something like 1884 later or work with this for a while and when u understand all the needs and issues of recording aim for the Pro ones. The latter is a better thing to do. Tascam products are really worth buying. once you buy it, don't expect everything to run smoothly. you'll have to give time to understand intricacies of recording and using the interface. but soon everything will be crystal clear. Keep the Patience and Good Luck !
