firewire burnt out after 5 years. HUGE paper weight now. It was great before that ,however. I used it with Sonar 7 and it seemed to have a nice clear sound, near zero latency, and nice layout.

Im running a 2 year old MDG pentium dual core @ 3 gHz with only 1MB of ram. When I first got this I was constantly pulling my hair out to get it to work. If you're having problems, It can easily be solved through wordclock and making sure your sampling rates are right (or youll get latency, clicks, pops, and a finicky mixer). I found that when I turn it on AFTER my computer finishes booting up, then run the program, then I have no problems. Every once in awhile (maybe 1/10 times I use it) it stops working (just the faders). Dont know why, don't care, big deal. save, restart the program and it's fine, takes all but 10 seconds of your time. this thing is ridiculously convenient and still saves you alot of time with the motorized faders and perfect control, I rarely use my mouse now that I'm mastering it. If you know what its like recording a bunch of tape channels, or even a digital system without a controller, then you'll notice this is a thousand times more efficient.

People complain its only 24 bits because of the new HD stuff, but your CD burns and plays at 16 bits anyways, so I dont see what the big deal. I wouldnt go as far as to say its a great value, as I got mine used at half this price, but it's definately a good buy, and there are comparable models that look cooler for way more cashola!

Less then adequate support

I agree that the drivers are less then adequate but my main issue is the lack of support. I had this working with my previous system. I upgraded to Vista 64 bit with large 8 gig RAM. The quality sound was very dirty and distorted. I know it was the Tascam FW 1884 because I used it with both Sibeleus and Cubase 4. I called them and was told it does not function correctly with 4 gig and above RAM. I have followed up with two emails in the last 2 months and they will not give me even a projected date to release the driver's/download to support this issue. There is nothing on their website that even mentions this problem. Had I known about it I probably would have purchased a smaller gig of RAM on my new computer. I will never buy another Tascam anything because of this.

Tascam FW-1884 will rock

I have owned the FW-1884 for about three years. I have also owned 4 or 5 other audio interfaces by other well known manufactures, and the FW-1884 is by far the best I've used. The learning curve is steep because it has a lot of functionality. But after you figure out what the buttons do, it's pretty easy to use. I've placed a lot of demands on it over the years and it has always done the job. A lot also depends on the quality of the peripheral equipment. On whether or not you have good effects processors, etc. Your weak link won't be the FW-1884.
