I'm using the US-144 with a Powerbook G4 running 10.5.8, an older one without a ton of memory. The US-144 works as does Cubase LE. Audacity crashes when I try to record, but I'm using the older "stable Audacity." I haven't had any latency issues, but then I'm not trying to record at 24/96 either.

I run my SM57 straight in and/or use the line out from my mixer without any trouble.

You need to download the latest drivers and firmware off of Tascam's site. The drivers on the CD are always old and out of date, no matter the product. If you insist on being lazy and not downloading the latest drivers, well then expect problems.

This interface provides a good quality, low noise recording. But I have the mic gain turned all the way up to see a decent recording level using a dynamic mic.

The real issue is that the USB driver is buggy, causing the dreaded BSOD Windows crash on my XP Pro laptop. It's not all the time, but once every day or two, which is too much in my opinion. I contacted TASCAM and here is their reply: "We have tested our driver on all operating systems and they seem to work correctly. If it is not working on your computer then it may be a conflict between the computer and the US-144. I would try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it, if that does not work then you can try it on another computer to see if there is something wrong with the unit. If it reacts the same on another computer then there might be something wrong with the physical unit, in which case would need to be exchanged. But I assure you the drivers work correctly on all operating systems." After searching the net I see many other complaints on the USB driver. I did uninstall the driver and reinstalled ver. 1.11 that came with the unit. I had installed 1.12 from TASCAM's website before I even used the unit. I haven't used it enough to tell if this will help, but I doubt it will.

For recording voice -- it's fine, although the volume level on its phones jack is poor (not the cans)when running through my DAW; stand alone, no prob. Then there was the latency issue when using either guitar input or the midi I/O. I've NEVER had latency issues and this was horrible! So... I'm uninstalling and will write this one off.

I've had this interface for over a year now. And I've had no problems. The only problem I've had is dealing my my old computer. That needs more memory. I'm running it on XP. And it accepted it just fine. I plan on getting a new computer hopefully a Mac.

I needed and audio interface to use with Sonar 6.0 Producer Edition. The Tascam US-144 was easy to load and use. Also, the recordings sound great. However, the Cubase LE4 software that came with it has problems running on my Apple iMac 20".
