The fast, flexible, and affordable center of your computer music setup. |
If your band is overflowing with ideas and you're ready to lay down some tracks, or you want to capture the fruit of your church choir's hard work, the 16-channel TASCAM US-1641 computer interface is one of your best choices for properly setting the recording straight. Eight mic/line inputs plus an additional six line inputs offer enough channels to give every instrument and voice a chance to shine and the included Cubase LE, Version 4, offers state-of-the art recording power to craft the right mix.
Small enough to fit into only one rackspace, this TASCAM interface is ideal for both studio and portable computer recording, and since the mic/line inputs are on the front panel, there's no need for crawling behind a rack to get going. On the rear panel, however, there are four balanced line inputs for interfacing with synths, effects, mic preamps, or anything with a line level out. With the TASCAM US-1641 you'll also get up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution without having to lower the input/output count and zero-latency monitoring to prevent distracting delays for your performers during recording.
Besides Cubase LE, you'll also receive the TASCAM Continuous Velocity Piano (PC), a responsive piano virtual instrument powered by GVI in VSTi format. Naturally, the US-1641 is ASIO, GSIF2, and CoreAudio compatible for use with Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Cubase, SONAR, Nuendo, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, Vegas, Live, GigaStudio, and most other audio recording software.

- 16 inputs and 4 outputs

Excellent Recorder

I bought this recorder mainly because it has 14 analog in/6 analog out (4 Line Out, Monitor L/R). It uses USB 2.0, which is nice, but not really important to me. It is a really great recorded, completing disregarding the price. All of the XLR in have phantom power (2 banks with 4 each). I haven't noticed any noise in any recording so far. This interface now support Vista 64 with the newest drivers available on the Tascam website. The only problem I have had is a few dropouts and pops here and there, but they are fixed after adjusting the buffers. With the important stuff out of the way, here are the non-important features that make this interface even better. Volume knobs are chrome
Each XLR channel has phantom power
Line In/Guitar ports on the front with pad
USB 2.0 really is nice
LED indicators to help with setting levels.
When recording drums, the LED indicators look awesome during fill-ins or a solo.

Great Value - US-1641

I purchased my Tascam US-1641 about a year and a half ago, so I have time to use it and navigate the software several times. I was looking for something to record my band and needed at least 10 inputs. This unit offers 14 analog and 1 stereo digital S/PDIF input! The price was right and it comes bundled with Cubase LE, a powerful and upgradeable software. Initially i had latency problems even with a new Dell Dual Core 1.6 processor set with 2 GB RAM - this is due to the fact that the USB bus in the PC was defaulting it's bandwidth allocation to the slowest device on the bus - like your keyboard or mouse. Once I installed a USB PCI 2.0 card in the machine and dedicated it to the Tascam US-1641, the problems went away. I recorded a live session with my band and it performed flawlessly! The mic pres are quiet and the line interface I used for vocals from the PA and keyboard input were clean as well - no noise. I was able to mix several songs for our CD and iTunes. Are there better interfaces out there? Probably. Are there better interfaces for even twice the price? Probably not. Nice unit for the money!

Great value, but requires a little effort

Overall, this has been a good purchase. It works exactly as advertised, with the caveat that the user must make sure that they have installed the latest driver and firmware update from the Tascam website (v1.02). I was having a latency problem until I installed the latest drivers. Now, no problems with overdubbing, even though my Windows laptop is an older generation machine. The other thing that users must check is whether the USB controller chipset in their PC is made by nVidia. The Tascam no likey those chips (this is stated on the Tascam website).
This device may take a little more than usual effort to set up, but works great once everything is dialed in.

I Bought the Tascam US 1641 when it first came out and It works Great for me.
I am using the unit with a E Machines W3503 with XP Media edetion OS and only 1 GIG RAM
The USB 2.0 technology is solid, I have used all 8 Mic line Inputs for VOX, drums, electric bass treble guitars and the instrument level inputs Simultaneously without any kinds of problems like excessive CPU usage, dropouts or latency issues .
I have used the Tascam 1641 for Live use to voice overs and over dubs and it works fantastic for any of those type of recording applications.
As a side note: The US 1641 works flawlessly with Reaper audio recording program.
this is the best recording interface I have found that offers so mush for so little and I most assuredly got more than what I paid for in comparison to Firewire systems in its same price range.

I bought it to use it with Logic Express 8. It was looking for something that was quite portable and had enough inputs to record my band. This was pretty much the only one that had those two key features within my budget. This is my first Tascam product, so was a bit skeptical and made sure the I could return it if I didn't like it. After using it a several times recording in the jam shack, there was no need for that. I was convinced that it was a good buy.
