Drum sampling that's as easy as a 1, and a 2, and a 3! |
EZdrummer was designed to give you optimum drum-sample quality presented in a compact, affordable plug-in format that's as easy to use as it is to mix. With Toontrack's EZdrummer, musicians and producers can simply drag-and-drop audition sounds and construct drumkits recorded with multi-microphone setups. You also get a mixer that allows stereo and multitrack routing into the host via a single plug-in and has presets for quick mix modes quick sound changing. With the second-generation Toontrack Percussive Compression (TPC), system requirements are low, meaning this is a very accessible virtual kit worthy of high-end studios, but available for the home studio too.
EZdrummer sampler features the recording and producing expertise of Pat Thrall (Pat Travers, Black Crowes) and Neil Dorfsman (Dire Straits, Paul McCartney), the drumming skills of Nir Z (Genesis, Joss Stone, John Mayer), and the engineering help of Toontrack's own Mattias Eklund and Henrik Kjellberg. Their combined efforts have produced an extensive collection of more than 8000 MIDI files captured at Avatar Studios, a 50-year old venue that has been the place where a veritable who's who of award-winning musicians have bottled their magic.
EZdrummer is now Windows Vista compatible. Updates are available at toontrack.com

I have owned the product for over 2 years, using it extensively. The drum sounds are good and the product is best used at 44.1khz recording (which is what the samples are at). You can route kit into 8 different channels (if your host program allows), so you can get fine control over the 8 tracks. (e.g. if you want compression, reverb on the snare, eq the kick drum, adjust the panning on the toms, etc). Of course, you can just use the onboard mixer to adjust the levels of the drum mics and not get into the detail if you choose not to. The included midi-grooves are very good but not terribly useful if you get away from standard rock/pop. Fortunately, you can buy expansions that now cover a wide variety of styles that give you more grooves, fills and of course, more drum kits. This product will not take the place of a good drummer and if you want the drum track to fit your particular song perfectly, then you will still have to spend the time tweaking the tracks. There's no way around that. For throwing together a quick demo this is lightning fast, and making customized tracks doesn't take long either.

I am a huge fan of this product. I also have Superior Drummer 2.2, but I still frequently use EZdrummer because it's THAT easy to get a good drum track put together in little to no time at all. For the price, it's a no-brainer tool to have in your drum plugin arsenal. EZX expansions are also very affordable, so you can easily expand EZD without huring the wallet. My favorites are Nashville and Vintage Rock. The Jazz EZX is also very cool sounding for mellower stuff.

EZDrummer is an excellent product, the drums sound natural, the interface is simple and straight forward, and the included grooves are a good starting off point. It's not the be all end all, but it's affordable, expandable and customizable. I would recommend this to anyone who's on a budget and needs to add drum tracks to their recording projects when mic'ing and acoustic kit isn't an option. I am not a drummer so this has helped me tremendously.

Admitedly I'm a noob with this software, but it does nothing on either of two systems I've installed and activated it on. The "on-line manual" is useless and so is ToonTack tech support. Check out their website. Also check out the EULA. It is the worst I've ever seen, and so is the stupid registration process. I can't get TT tech support to give me any info or guidance. So much potential has turned into a waste of money and time. ToonTrack is obviously not interested in customer service - in fact they are customer hostile.

Notice that the description of the EZdrummer product does NOT mention how many kits come in the box. That's because it only comes with one! That's right. You basically get on Rock Kit. There is a wimpy cocktail kit, but it is basically a couple of percussion instruments and a two cymbals.
