The Universal Audio LA-610 Tube Recording Channel combines the 610 Mic-Pre/EQ/DI section and a T4 Opto-compressor into a 2RU unit. The 610-tube preamp, DI, and EQ is from UA's TEC-award winning 6176 and is based on the legendary console modules developed by Bill Putnam in the '60s, noted for their musical character and warmth. An ideal front-end for tracking with modern DAWs and for the serious project studio looking for quality UA sound. It uses three 12AX7As, a 6072A, and a 6AQ5 tube for warmth and overall tonal balance. After the preamp section comes the T4 optical compressor, the heart and soul of the famed Teletronix LA-2A.

UA LA-610

Very nice piece of equipment. I actually have the MKII version which has LED's for the power lamp and meter lighting. They say they will never burn out or need replacement. It also has true compressor bypass. The pre-amp is warm and sweet. It truely makes the vocals blend with the rest of the mix. You have to be careful with the gain on vocals because it drives the tubes very easily which is a sound I am not fond of. But a wonderful addition if you can afford it.

I have tried a LOT of very high end mic pres and compressors lately in my studio. Not just auditioning, but actually using them on projects. This unit has risen to the top of the bunch. It outperforms a lot of other gear costing a lot more. It's one of the best values in pro audio today. Very flexible, and it just sounds awesome. Do yourself a favor and just buy one. I'm getting another one!

plug in a piece of history

After setting up a 16-track studio about 6 years ago, I wanted to take my tracks to the next level. I have no regrets about this purchase. It makes all my tracks sound professionally done - bass, acoustic guitar, vocals, overhead drums, and electric guitar. If you like the way professionally recorded music has been sounding for the last 40 years, then purchase the one thing that gives it that unique identity (besides a good microphone) and buy an LA-610 - You will be thrilled beyond belief. Now I rarely use any other EQ or compression. This is the most effective piece of equipment I have EVER bought in over 45 years and many thousands of dollars.

Save yourself a lot of disappointment and spend your money on high quality gear. This thing is the best. I make vocals sound like they are a part of the song. It compresses guitar beautifully. It can make nearly any mic sound great. I tried many of the digital tube want to-bees and there is no substitute for UA equipment.

Who needs An Avalon 737?!

Probably the hardest part of new gear is being giddy from opening the box to the placement of the unit in your hardware chain. Not so with the LA-610. The part that gets you is after you hook it up, and wait for the tubes to warm (1hour) to perfection - similiar to a fine wine aging on your shelf. I am stepping up from a couple Presonus Eureka's which nearly get me the warmth I desire. Keyboard/guitar/vocals, I will take this wherever I travel - and hope to have this unit for decades to come. You cannot compete with the price. with this performance - and with the recent spike in the Avalon 737 price this unit is a must have. If you must purchase something worth your energy to make a decent sounding album, please I insist, buy the LA-610.
