Teamed up with a sub, these are a total delight for audiophiles and studio folk. Yes, they are weak on bass however the range they deliver is spot on for a 2.1 setup. I originally purchased these after my beloved MKII's went to monitor heaven. Every person who has heard these things (including my hard-of-hearing father)has commented on the amazing clarity of the monitors. Never got those compliments with the Alesis twins....The tweeter is ultra crystal clear without tiring the ear from high sibilants. If my Yamaha's were to fail, I would immediately replace them with another pair. Done.

BTW, I purchased the Rockit RP-10S Subwoofer (which only needs a hair of gain) and it's the perfect setup. I put the crossover on the sub at 80Hz and kept the HS50M's flat. No EQ needed. I can't emphasize enough how gorgeous these things are to listen to!!!

High end killers

Save your money and get the M-Audio BX5a deluxe. The HS50's are ok but have harsh highs that tend to kill you ears after listening to them for a while.

The best monitors for mixing !

I have 6.5 and 8 inches Adams and Genelecs. They sound wonderful for LISTENING, but for mixing they have phase problems. I bought these to improve my mixings and WOW ! They translate to any system ACCURATELY. Don't get the sub woofer, otherwise phase problems are going to appear in your mixes. If you want to only enjoy the music get the subwoofer, but don't mix music with it.

As close to ns 10 as possible

These are good monitors. I thought about getting ns 10s but then an amp would run me another 800 bucks at least. These get the job done in terms of near fields. I heard about a lot of people complaining about the lack of low end, but what do you expect from 5'' monitors?! come on guys, of course it's gonna lack low end. In a way that's kind of the purpose. These are reference monitors, not mains. You need to spend more if you want to accurately reproduce the low end.

It's to bad......

It's to bad my pair of Yamaha HS50M were faulty from the get go. After reading so many reviews saying how great these monitors were, I was very dissapointed to find out that there not at all what there cracked up to be. The highs and mids on them are excellent but the lows? FORGET IT! I threw some drum tracks on for monitoring and the worst buzzing sound leaked out of them. I guess yamaha expects you to buy the subwoofer, to take some of the load off of the left and right near field monitors. Give me a break, but hey I should of known; " YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" save your money and get something a little better Like a pair of Mackies.
