12 input channels

The Yamaha MG12/4 12-Input 4 Bus Mixer gives you 4 mono microphone/line inputs and four stereo line inputs, 2 of which offer mono microphone input capability, for a total of 6 XLR mic inputs.

Six low-noise, high-precision mic preamps

Six high-performance head amplifiers that will bring out the best in any dynamic or condenser microphone.

Phantom power

All six of the MG12/4's high-performance mic preamps feature switchable phantom power for studio condenser microphones. A single switch turns phantom power on or off for all six channels.

Insert I/O

All mono input channels feature insert I/O patch points so you can add extra signal processing to the channels as required.

4 buses (stereo and group)

In addition to the main stereo bus, the MG12/4 features a stereo group bus and outputs that can be used for convenient channel grouping.

3-band Channel EQ and HPF

Smooth, musical-response 3-band equalizers on all input channels. All mono microphone input channels also feature a switchable high-pass filter that can be used to cut out unwanted low-frequency noise.

Two aux sends and stereo aux return

Two auxiliary sends on each channel—one post-fader and one switchable for pre- or post-fader operation—provide plenty of flexibility for external signal processing and monitoring. A stereo auxiliary return is also provided.

Illuminated switches

Illuminated ON (ST buss assign), PFL (pre-fader listen), and phantom-power switches provide easy visual confirmation of critical console settings.

Rackmount adapters included

Use your MG mixer on a desktop or mounted in a rack-rackmount adapters are provided.

I bought this mixer because is seemed to represent a reasonable value. It was great, for about 4 months. After that, the pre's started to go and the hum and noise started to pop up. I finally got rid of it and bought the Mackie 1402. Save your money and go for something built better.

I've had this board for a few years. First I used it as a recording input to a 2 channel card. It was OK for that. Recently I've used it more as a mixer for our jazz quintet where it's used to mic Vox, guitar amp, sax plus line in for keyboard. It's clean, and has given us no fuss whatsoever in this application. It’s easy to use and durable. I highly recommend for the price.

Favorite Features: channel inserts, mute, PFL, sub group, two aux buses, one pre/post EQ and peak indicators on mic channels.

The faders, knobs and buttons have a smooth solid feel with linear response.

I think the combination of features and quality make this board an over-achiever for this price range.

I got this thing so I could mix down my drums to a stereo signal. The first 4 mic pre-amps are great- Low noise, good EQ... The last 2 which can also be used for stereo line inputs are a bit weaker. Even with the gain all the way down, they still clip when using my Senheiser E604 tom mics. I also had to use the 10db pad when using my MXL 993s to mic my cymbals in these channels. These 2 channels shoul dbe no different than the first four in my opinion.

It works and does what it claims

We've been running this board for a year now and found some problems with the mic preamps, not that they don't work, but that they are rather light weight. One incident even had us turning down the gain, that was only set at 11 o'clock (reasonable) and we got distortion. Not good.

The "flow" of the signal path is okay, but lacks real versatility. We had to choose either/or on assignment to the main outputs. We did like the stereo inputs on the channels it was featured.

Then I bought another mixer by a Redmond Washington company and the difference was immediate. The Yamaha lacked clarity where this other was cleaner sounding, and with better EQ (mid sweep). While the EQ on the Yamaha works well enough, it is limited in what it can do.

This board served it's purpose well enough, but you will outgrow it pretty quickly unless you're a duo and don't need a lot of inputs. But, your sonic clarity will still be lacking.
