love/hate relationship

I got the SM 58 with switch. I never cared for Shure b/c there were always better sounding mic's out there. I've had an EV for years- phat, powerful sounding... blows the 58 out of the water. I can side by side my EV with other peoples Shure's and it always sounds phatter, and has more gain.

Problem is though, I have a loud, phat voice... so its just too much chocolate when I use the EV. When I plug in a SM 58 Im not dealing with excessive signal, which means less feedback. The 58 ahs forced me to realize my EV is just too sensitive/powerful for my voice:(

On top of it all, 99.99% of the musicians I play with have Shure mic's (me~drummer) ... so having matching mic's onstage also helps cut down on feedback.

I still hate Shure SM 58's, but I sound good through them. In the world of sound reproduction I've come to accept the fact that its actually good for me to be with the herd. I'll keep my EV on the side for people who sit-in that have a weak/thin voice.

Best mic I've ever used

Months ago I purchased a Shure SM58S to replace an old Electro Voice mic but never got around to using it. I used it for the first time last night and was blown away. My vocals were clear and crisp and there was none of that annoying feedback from my temperamental old Electro Voice mic. You can pay hundreds of dollars for a good vocal mic, but with the SM58, there's no reason to. It's all you'll ever need.

Shure has always made great mics. This one is not one of those. It lacks quality and gain. My band mate has an older 58 that blows mine out of the water! I have a 9 dollar NADY that came with a mic stand order. The Nady as far as tone and gain blows this one away although it was a bit noisy.. What a shame huh? I would rather Shure go up on the cost than cut back on quality.

A lot of good mics out there to try, but if you don't have the SM58 to go back to, you'll never know for yourself. It'll fatten up some weaker voices a little, but if you sound lousy, well, this mic will reproduce that very accurately, too... I use this with a Mackie Onyx 1220. I also have an Audix OM-2, which I use more for acoustic guitar.

I just don't think this mic cuts it. I found that when there was a lot of other noise in the room (e.g. a plugged-in guitar, somebody else on another mic) it couldn't keep up with the rest of the sound. Plus, not having a switch is INCONVENIENT. If you do get this mic, get the one with a switch - spend the extra $5 for sure.
